Nutrition Q and A's
What healthy snacks have you been planning?
I recommend that you eat a snack about every 3 hours to keep your metabolism going and to prevent your blood sugar from dropping. Try combining a healthy complex carb with a protein for your next snack.
Here are some snacks that you might not have thought of:
* 18 rice crackers w/ 1 TB of natural peanut butter. Also try cashew butter, almond butter, sun butter, or soy nut butter for more variety
* Slice an apple, sprinkle with cinnamon and serve with an ounce of low-fat cheddar cheese
* 4 oz of skim milk with 1/4 cup of Bear Naked All Natural Granola.
* 4 TB of hummus with 1 cup of raw sugar snap peas, red peppers, or celery
* 28 Tamari almonds
* Half of a whole wheat Arnold Sandwich Thin, toasted and spread lightly with natural peanut butter and ½ a banana
* Boil an egg, scoop out the yolk and fill each half with hummus
* Spread a whole wheat wrap with hummus and grated carrots roll up and enjoy!
* Melt 1 reduced fat mozzarella string cheese over 14 Kashi cheddar crackers.
* Roll a banana in 1 TB of natural peanut butter and 1 TB of granola
Say, “NO” to hydrogenated vegetable oil.
Hydrogenated oils or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils are trans fats and should be avoided. About 40% of the foods on grocery store shelves contain trans fats even if the label says, “0 grams of trans fats.” Companies get around this by making their snack crackers, i.e., Ritz, Cheese Its, etc. with less than .5 grams of trans fats per serving so the label can read 0 grams. TRANS FATS promote inflammation in the body and should be eliminated as much as possible.”
What's the real story about High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)?
According to a recently article published in Family Health & Wellness magazine "Consumption of HFCS can elevate triglyceride levels, which can increase the risk of heart disease and upset the magnesium, copper, chromium, and zinc levels in the body." Don't be fooled into thinking that HFCS is safer than sugar. Try to buy natural snacks, crackers, and breads without High-Fructose Corn Syrup.
I like MSN Health & Fitness Center. In their recent article, "Steam a little green," they explained the difference between cooking broccoli in the microwave and steaming it on the stove. Steaming instead of microwaving enhances the power of the cancer fighting compound Sulforaphane, which has been shown to halt the growth of breast cancer cells. Get even more protection by sprinkling on 1 tablespoon of selenium rich sunflower seeds which increases the Sulforaphane's potency.
What our clients say
Basics Fitness Center and nutritional counseling from Lisa has changed my outlook on life. Entering my “senior” years, the importance of exercise became evident. I have a new-found energy and overall feeling of well being. This from a person who has multiple sclerosis and a former couch potato!”
